End of the year review: season 12
Written by Boyznbetti
As we skate into the new Roarin’ 20’s and a new Season of derby, let’s take a look back and reflect on some of the High Scores (highlights) and Low Blocks (lows) of the 2018-2019 season.
High Scores
Our travel team, the BRB All-Stars climbed spots in the worldwide Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) rankings. They started the year ranked #222 and are now ranked at #135 out of 368 teams worldwide. They traveled to California 3 times, having their most successful bout in BRB history against Central Coast Roller Derby back in March of 2019 and topping that bout against SoCal Roller Derby in December.
On the home team front Team FLASH once again took the Championship trophy, making it their third year in a row. Tough Love took 2nd in league standing and Cog Blockers landed in 3rd.
Season 12 saw one of the biggest Booty Camps led by the great coaches Classless Chaps, Princess Rainbow Sparkle and Pokeyto… Mustachio. We gained 17 new skaters to our Grit Pit team!
We held multiple training events including clinics by: Miracle Whips of Montreal Roller Derby and Team Canada, Gal of Fray of Rose City Rollers & Riedell Superstar of 2019, and in January 2020, we will have a training clinic with Freight Train of Texas Roller Girls
Our wonderful sponsor, Tony’s Coffee, created a medium roast “Betties Brew” that we were able to use as a fundraiser for the league (huge shout out to Tony’s Coffee)
A sponsor since 2007, Boundary Bay brewed us our own Bettie’s inspired IPA called “Insubordination”. Keep an eye out for it again on the shelves in 2020
Low Blocks
We said goodbye to many important skaters that helped shaped the BRB community including: Tornado Ally of home team F.L.A.S.H. and the BRB All-Stars, Pinky Pansy Dropper of home team F.L.A.S.H, Kill A Blockingbird of the home team The Cog Blockers (you will still see her in stripes as a referee in Season 13!)
