Mission Statement
Bellingham Roller Betties is a skater-owned collaboration of community-minded individuals dedicated to empowering people of all backgrounds and identities through the sport of roller derby.
Values
Being Respectful – We foster trust and share mutual respect on and off the track. We approach all members and volunteers within our community with humility and recognize the value each person brings. We strive to build caring and professional relationships with our community by showing respect, treating everyone the way we want to be treated as individuals. Above all, we respect and adhere to the WFTDA rules of flat-track roller derby
Encouraging Open & Honest Communication - We strive to promote healthy conversations to solve problems. We actively listen and seek first to understand. We strive to educate each other by creating a culture built on accountability, recognizing the empowerment and impact of our language and words.
Team-First Attitude - We recognize our league as a team of individuals working towards our collective mission. We value individual athletic abilities, talents, and progress while placing our common goals ahead of personal glory. We arrive at practice and bouts focused and prepared. When our league needs us, we step up. Our leaders lead by example. As circumstances change, we adapt as needed and remain flexible. We work as a team to ensure the success of each other as a league.
Treatment of Mind & Body - We dedicate ourselves to building and maintaining the physical strength required to play our sport and protect ourselves from injury. We cultivate mental toughness by persevering with a positive attitude, encouraging and supporting each other always. We bring intensity and focus to everything we do, on and off the track. We challenge ourselves and each other to be the best we can be. We are confident we can succeed no matter what.
Inclusivity & Diversity - We value diversity and inclusion by valuing the contributions of each of our members and showing consideration for everyone’s ideas, feelings, and experiences. We strive to maintain a league culture where all members and volunteers– including Black, Indigenous, People of Color, LGBTQIA+, disabled members, and everyone– are welcomed, included, and celebrated.
Exercising a Derby/ Life Balance - We are realistic about the demands of this sport and running the league with an all-volunteer staff. We take time to care for our own physical, mental, and emotional health so that we can be as fully present as possible when our league needs us. We are honest with ourselves and listen to our bodies and each other about our boundaries and limitations.
